Dali Project: Vitamin D and Lifestyle Intervention for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus PreventionGestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a more important contributor to the European Type 2 diabetes (T2D) epidemics than previously recognised, therefore strategies to arrest this inter-generational transmission are urgently needed. DALI is a large scale, research project being carried out in 11 European countries with the aim of developing effective preventative measures for GDM. The DALI Research Team have designed a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to test an intervention (diet, exercise and vitamin D supplementation, alone or in combination) that has the best impact on outcomes of GDM. Women will be randomised to receive different doses of Vitamin D (500/1000/1500 IU/day) once daily from approximately 12 weeks gestation until birth, or will receive a lifestyle intervention (diet, physical activity or diet and physical activity advice) to be delivered at 5 coaching sessions by a lifestyle coach from 16 weeks gestation until birth. Strategies to diminish inter-generational Type 2 Diabetes transmission are required urgently, however, there is insufficient evidence as to what these strategies should be and DALI’s goal is to contribute to a European strategy for GDM prevention. |

SCAN: Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse ServiceThis research is to evaluate the impact of the fast track priority referral and assessment system for individuals experiencing a suicidal crisis, known as Suicide Crisis Assessment Nurse (SCAN) Service operated at two sites: Cluain Mhuire Community Mental Health Services and HSE South East (Wexford). A third site (Galway) will be used for matched comparison of GP and MH Team experiences of liaison in suicide crisis (i.e. ’usual care’). An online questionnaire, administered to GP’s both in areas where the SCAN service is available and in areas where they do not have access to the SCAN service and instead use the mental health service for patients in suicidal crisis, will collect views and opinions about the support services available for suicide crisis assessment. The objective is to ascertain if SCAN assessment is preferable to key stakeholders when compared with traditional emergency psychiatric assessment; whether there is an improvement in GP/Primary Care Teams awareness, sensitivity and confidence in dealing with self-harm and suicide; and whether SCAN has enhanced relationships between primary care and community mental health teams. The results of this study will be presented in a report for SCAN and the National Office for Suicide Prevention. |

HPAT Face Validity StudyThe introduction of the Health Professionals Admission Test, Ireland or HPAT as a selection tool for medical students has proved controversial. In order for the HPAT to have both public and professional acceptability it must demonstrate validity. Face validity is the most basic of all validities - a test can be said to have face validity if it ’looks like’ it is going to measure what it is supposed to measure. The aim of this case study is to establish the face validity of the HPAT amongst a selection of doctors practicing in Ireland. The outcome should help inform the debate on the role of the HPAT as a selection tool for Irish Medical Schools. |

FATE: Fall Detector for the ElderFalls in the ageing people and their devastating consequences show this is a major health problem requiring an urgent solution. The objectives of FATE “Fall Detector for the Elder” are: correct detection of the falls occurring with elderly people; contribution to the reduction of the fear of falling; and the prevention of the long lie syndrome. The system consists of a highly sensitive fall detector based in accelerometers running a specific detection algorithm to detect falls both at home and outside. A telecommunications layer based in wireless technologies will be able to send alarms when the falls occur whether the person is at home or in an outside location via 3G or GPRS protocol. Detected falls will be automatically communicated to relatives or health providers through call centres. For people with more serious gait difficulties, the i-Walker, an intelligent walker designed to minimize the risk of falls will be included. FATE will be tested through three large pilots in three different countries (Spain, Ireland and Italy) with different, but complementary, health management system approaches and models.http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/apps/projects/factsheet/index.cfm?project_ref=297178 |

The UTI-C ProjectThe UTI-C project is an interdisciplinary programme in which an intervention to improve antimicrobial prescribing for UTI in general practice will be set up. This collaboration brings together three distinct disciplines: epidemiology, social marketing and health economics. The main aim of the intervention is to decrease the overall amount of antimicrobials used in primary care and increase appropriate antimicrobial prescribing for UTI when needed. This is a three year programme and preparations for the intervention have started. http://www.antibiotics.nuigalway.ie/ |
